Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Miller in memory of Nellie Holmead Fowler
Object Details
After the British burned the Capitol during the War of 1812, a complete renovation of the building was in order, including making new furniture for the House Chamber. A cabinetmaker from New York, Thomas Constantine, was awarded the contract for a simple design of a mahogany chair with a stuffed, horse-hair seat. These chairs were used in the House from 1819 to 1857.
