In 1867, artist and retired Army General Seth Eastman was commissioned to paint nine works for the House Committee on Indian Affairs. Eastman chose subjects illustrating aspects of traditional Native American life, here depicting the Dakota Dog Dance. The artist reportedly attended such an event, and he pays special attention to the details of dress. The ceremonial dance was meant to inspire in its participants the sagacity and bravery of the dog.
