Seth Eastman included three images of Fort Sumter in the series of 17 paintings commissioned by the House Committee on Military Affairs. Particularly significant for its role in the advent of the Civil War, Eastman depicts Fort Sumter before the conflict and from two perspectives after it was attacked. Here, the fort is intact, but it is surrounded by choppy waters and threatening clouds. The wrecked sailboat in the foreground further foreshadows the coming violence.
