Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives
In 1870, the House Committee on Military Affairs commissioned artist and retired Army General Seth Eastman to paint 17 views of important forts across the country, in commemoration of the Civil War's end. The resulting works are serene landscapes, which, per the instructions of the committee, include no battle scenes. The two forts pictured here were located near Staten Island. Eastman emphasizes quotidian life, showing workers at leisure in the foreground and various vessels floating in the peaceful New York Harbor.
