George Dondero hated modern art with an abiding passion. Dorothy Drew, the artist of his portrait, shared his opinions. In 1957, she testified before Congress, denouncing abstract art’s “radical elements” and Soviet influence. Dondero chaired the Public Works Committee, which oversaw federal art projects, and in addition to the portrait she painted of him, Drew also provided fodder for his anti–modern art arguments.
