Unveiled on January 10, 1928—30 years after Nelson Dingley served as Chairman for the Committee on Ways and Means—this portrait by artist Eben Comens demonstrates the committee's firm commitment to recognizing each of its past chairmen. Seated in what resembles the 1857 House Chamber chairs, before a desk strewn with papers, the chairman seems to be pointing out something on the document in his hand. Such a pose—the sitter engaged in daily work—would have been highly unusual among Dingley’s contemporaries in the 1890s.
