Ways and Means Committee Chair William Archer’s portrait is set in the Capitol, in Room 208, a space distinguished by historic details. The chairman stands in front of the room’s original marble fireplace mantel, designed by Architect of the Capitol Thomas U. Walter. A gilded Rococo mirror above the mantel also dates from the 19th century. More elaborate and specific settings evoking the historic grandeur of the Capitol became increasingly popular for chairman portraits in the 1990s, a departure from the more abstract spaces seen in paintings from previous decades.
