Daniel Reed’s portrait for the Ways and Means Committee was painted while he was Chairman. It was hung in the hearing room without ceremony after artist Jean Spencer completed the work in the mid-1950s. Like other works from the mid-20th century, the Reed portrait is unfussy, with a vague background and limited anecdotal detail. Spencer keeps the focus on the subject’s likeness, utilizing a limited palette of blues and grays.
