Reportedly acquired in 1920, Freeman Thorp’s portrait of Ways and Means Committee Chairman—and later President of the United States—William McKinley was likely painted in the 1890s. Like McKinley, artist Freeman Thorp hailed from Ohio. Thorp received a number of commissions from the House of Representatives, giving some credence to the unsubstantiated tale—published in Charles Fairman’s Art and Artists of the Capitol—that he had a rooftop studio in the Capitol.
