Willis Hawley’s straightforward portrait commemorating his service as Chairman of the Ways and Means committee was completed in 1932. Artist Boris Gordon enjoyed considerable popularity in the House of Representatives, particularly with the Ways and Means Committee, where five of his portraits currently hang. Gordon emigrated from Switzerland in 1907, and later enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in World War I. After his military service, he settled in Washington, D.C., and established himself as a portrait artist.
