Artist Margaret Brisbine painted two portraits of World War Veterans’ Legislation Committee Chairmen, including this one of Royal Johnson, the committee’s first chairman. Brisbine was born in South Dakota and moved to Houston, Texas, as a child. She studied at the Rice Institute there, graduating in 1923. She exhibited widely in New York for the next 15 years, executing large-scale murals in several churches. Her portrait of Johnson was made six years after he left the House, and just a year before his death.
