Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives
Margaret Brisbine painted this portrait of Chairman John Rankin to mark his service on the World War Veterans’ Legislation Committee. The committee, which ultimately became the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, had jurisdiction over the government’s services to military veterans. The American Legion donated this portrait as well as that of the previous chairman, Royal Johnson, also by Brisbine. In this work, she portrays Rankin framed by of one of the House’s large “Turkish” chairs, then a common sight in the House.
