The Veterans of Foreign Wars' Post 1830 presented the portrait of Sonny Montgomery to the House in recognition of his service as Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Artist Tom Nielson was a graphic artist at the Veterans’ Administration, Post 1830’s home. He placed Montgomery in an interior setting, his hand leaning on a “Turkish” chair, a type of furniture made in 1908 for the building where the committee met, now known as the Cannon House Office Building.
