Specific reference to the work of the Science Committee became a trend among chairmen’s portraits in the late 20th century. Robert Walker’s Chairman portrait shows a three-quarter length likeness in an abstract space, rising above Earth. A covered wagon, depicted in immense relative scale, sits on the surface of the planet, while a launching space shuttle and satellite flank the figure. The juxtaposition of the wagon and shuttle perhaps signify the pioneering spirit of the United States and the progression of technology and exploration.
