It was no coincidence that a Coast Guard sailor painted the portrait of Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee Chairman Schuyler Bland. Specialist First Class Sandor Klein was an Académie Julian–trained combat artist serving on the U.S.S. Calloway when his portrait of a shipmate came to the attention of official Washington. His orders ultimately brought him stateside where he was commissioned to paint Bland’s portrait. He portrays Bland in the committee hearing room, standing behind the dais with a globe and gavel, the Capitol visible through the window behind him.
