Walter Jones chaired the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee for a decade, from 1981 until his death in 1992. He represented North Carolina’s coastal plain, home to marine trades and ports. Jones’ portrait shows him seated in front of a bookcase filled with volumes of the United States legal code, a familiar sight in House Committee offices.
