Mo Udall chaired the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee for more than 14 years. His portrait, painted by artist Ray Kinstler, was completed in 1985, halfway through his leadership of the committee. Kinstler placed Udall in a setting of gold-hued architectural details. The Chairman rests his hand on a column base, while corniced walls recede behind him. In contrast, Udall himself presents an informal picture. He stands in shirtsleeves, one finger hooked through a loop on the jacket he’s thrown over his shoulder.
