The 2001 portrait of Small Business Committee Chairman Jim Talent harks back to an earlier style of portrait: the sculpted portrait bust, which was favored in the 19th century. The plain background is enlivened with the stripes of the American flag along the canvas’ left edge. Its diagonal lines give a sense of three-dimensionality to the flag and motion to the portrait as a whole.
