Canadian artist Robert Hyndman combined realism with abstract elements in his portrait of Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman Henry Reuss. The Chairman is painted with fidelity and detail, down to the buttons on his jacket. The window to the left and Washington’s monumental landscape to the right, however, become a flowing river of color. Hyndman trained at the Toronto Central Technical School and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before becoming a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and official war artist during World War II. During and following the war, Hyndman focused on portraiture, executing commissions throughout North America.
