Artist Lloyd Embry used some of the loosest brushstrokes represented in the House collection in this portrait of Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Robert Chiperfield. Embry studied at Yale School of Art, graduating with a B.F.A. in 1936. Although his early style was academic and polished, by the time of the Chiperfield commission, he had adopted an impressionistic, fluid manner.
