Political cartoons grab a reader’s attention, and that’s likely how Chicago congressman Thomas Gordon first heard of artist Walter Krawiec. He was a legendary cartoonist for the city’s Polish Daily News, and Gordon had known him at least since the 1920s, when both men worked for the newspaper. Krawiec’s newspaper subjects ranged from local to international topics, but his oil paintings included scenes of farms, stockyards, and circuses, of which he was particularly fond. This rendering of Gordon as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee is one of his few known portraits.
