John Charles Linthicum was a well-loved Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and the unveiling of his posthumous portrait brought out officials from his home state of Maryland as well as from the embassies affected by the committee, and it was followed by the unusual honor of a reception in the Speaker’s Lobby. The portrait was executed by Maryland artist Thomas Corner, who had studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. Like American artists before and after him, Corner strove to have a painting accepted in the Paris Salon, and toward the end of his studies, his self-portrait was included in the Salon of 1891.
