The portrait of Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Charles Eaton was one of two portraits Alfred Jonniaux painted for the House Collection. Jonniaux was born in 1882 in Belgium, where he trained at Brussels’ Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He launched his career as a portrait painter in London in 1919, immigrated to the United States during World War II, and became a U.S. citizen in 1946. His Washington studio and exhibitions brought him to the attention of official Washington, resulting in many commissions over the next two decades.
