The portrait of Chairman Sam McReynolds was likely painted after he died in 1939, during his ninth year as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Little is known of the artist, Henry Wolf, who used a formal photograph of the Chairman as the basis for this portrait. McReynolds is shown looking resolutely into the distance, a smile playing about his lips. The simple pose and neutral background were typical of committee portraits of the first half of the 20th century.
