Like other portraits of Agriculture Committee Chairmen, this painting takes advantage of the committee hearing room’s location. The blue-and-gold brocade curtains frame the view of the Capitol from the hearing room’s balcony, a much-loved aspect of the room. Chairman Bob Smith leans on the committee’s dais, holding a gavel, the symbol of his authority, and sporting the official lapel pin worn by Members of Congress.
