After 30 years in Congress and four years as Agriculture Committee Chairman, Clifford Hope marked his retirement with a portrait. The choice of Mabel Pugh as artist may have been inspired by her portrait of former Chairman Harold Cooley, unveiled just a year before. Pugh trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and worked as an illustrator and teacher for most of her career. She exhibited nationally throughout her career, winning particular acclaim for her work in printmaking.
