Budget Committee Chairman Martin Sabo’s dark figure, set against stark white, dominates this portrait. Unlike many portraits in the House Collection, this painting includes none of the familiar attributes of authority. The intent stare and the portrait’s slightly over life-sized dimensions carry the power in this image. The portrait’s style is unusual for paintings in the House. Its approach is photorealist in style, and the subject addresses the viewer directly. The field of white space eliminates any reference to time and place. The only personal information in the painting is in the clothing.
