Leon Panetta’s portrait commemorates his service as Chairman of the House Budget Committee from 1989 to 1993, but the setting is the office he occupied in the White House in 1996, as President Clinton’s chief of staff. The landscape painting in the background shows a bit of the coastline in Panetta’s California district. The buffalo sculpture on the mantel was a gift from his wife and a reminder of the drive and energy needed for his work.
