This painting of Armed Services Committee Chairman Floyd Spence illustrates two familiar elements of 21st century House portraiture—the flag and dome. The dome serves as visual shorthand for the sitter’s legislative service. The American flag, symbol of the nation, appears in almost 50 portraits in the House. Its prevalence relates not only to its iconic nature but also to the splash of color it adds. In this portrait, the artist has added another American emblem—a small version of The Minuteman, Daniel Chester French’s oft-reproduced 1874 statue.
