The artist George Matthews was born in 1857 in Tappahannock, Virginia. He studied in Paris in the early 1880s, particularly with the painter Carolus Duran. Upon his return to Virginia he opened a studio in Richmond, but soon moved to Washington, where he spent the balance of his career. Matthews specialized in portraiture, landscape, and Southern history painting, particularly of the Confederate period. His work is represented in the Congress by two portraits in the House, two in the Senate, and countless repainted areas of the Capitol’s frescoes. This painting of Chairman William Wood marks the subject’s leadership of the Appropriations Committee.
