One of two works in the House Collection by John Johansen, this portrait depicts Appropriations Committee Chairman Edward Taylor at a cluttered desk, pencil in hand. The artist adopted his painterly style at Paris’ Académie Julien. The breezy brushwork belies the sitter’s hard-nosed reputation. From Colorado’s Western Slope, Taylor knew firsthand about the cutthroat competition for resources in the West. He championed public land and water and brought into being the federal Bureau of Land Management. The portrait was a gift from landowners around the Taylor Park Reservoir, named for its greatest advocate.
