Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives
Marshall Bouldin III painted the portrait of fellow Mississippian Jamie Whitten and three other works in the House Collection. Bouldin studied briefly at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1940s, then began a career as an illustrator. In the 1950s, he turned from creating genre scenes of the rural South to portrait commissions. Bouldin’s work in the House of Representatives began with this portrait, which sets the Appropriations Committee Chairman against a dark background, interrupted by a splash of gold behind the sitter’s head.
