Object Details

Wearing large headphones and an expression halfway between shock and amusement, Representative Harold Donohue tests the equipment that Judiciary Committee members would later use to listen to the Watergate tapes. This photograph of Donohue and committee Chair Peter Rodino was taken in May 1974, less than a week after the committee began impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon. However, Nixon withheld audio implicating him in a cover-up from the committee. After the Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment, he finally released the tapes on August 5, and resigned the presidency on August 9, 1974.
