Object Details

As part of the development of the House of Representatives’ portrait of Shirley Chisholm, the artist proposed several poses and settings. This drawing shows a mix of elements, some of which appear in the final portrait. The scale of the figure within the space and the graphically patterned coat are similar to the final version. However, the subject’s more restrained pose and the background cityscape were swapped for the Capitol and a more commanding hand gesture.
