Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of Bruce Schuettinger
With spectators waving handkerchiefs and throwing hats, this print depicts the riotous celebration on the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in the House Chamber on January 31, 1865. Years after the event, this print appeared in The Soldier in Our Civil War: A Pictorial History of the Conflict, 1861–1865. The copiously illustrated volume primarily concerned itself with plentiful details about the Civil War and battle scenes. The momentous passage of the 13th Amendment was a notable exception to the military scenes.
