Object Details

When former President Ronald Reagan died in 2004, the House passed a resolution regarding his death and funeral. Following customs from the early days of the Republic, the resolution set up a committee of official delegates to the funeral and announced that the House would “adjourn as a further mark of respect to the memory of the former President.” When a serving Member passed away in the 19th century, the House not only adjourned, but also donned black armbands for 30 days and arranged to host or attend the funeral. By the 21st century, mourning attire had been abandoned, but the other traditions for major statesmen such as Reagan, who lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda, continued.
