Before the start of Congress in December 1932, the Capitol campus underwent cleaning, fireproofing, and construction projects. “The District of Columbia Fire Department gave the building its bath a few weeks ago and now it appears fresh and bright,” reported the New York Times in late November. City firefighters assisted the Architect of the Capitol by hosing down the exterior of the Capitol annually for more than 60 years.
