Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of Nicola Battaglia in memory of Aurelius Battaglia and Eleanor Mill
Object Details
Rolled-up documents under one arm and her trademark corsage firmly in place, legendary legislator Edith Nourse Rogers is all business in this sketch from the early 1930s. Rogers was known as “the busiest woman on Capitol Hill,” and her 18-hour workdays, coupled with immense political savvy, fueled victories on behalf of women in the military and ultimately passage of the landmark GI Bill. Artist Aurelius Battaglia, catching Rogers near the beginning of her long career, captures the charisma and humor that characterized her House service.
