Installed atop the Capitol dome on December 2, 1863, the Statue of Freedom, or Armed Freedom, is a constant observer of events below. The statue was designed by Thomas Crawford and fabricated at a foundry near Washington by Clark Mills and Philip Reid. Reid, an enslaved laborer at the time of the statue’s casting, had already been freed by the District Emancipation Act when the last piece of the statue was put in place.
