With one arm resting on the fender of his shiny automobile, Joseph Cannon posed for a photograph shortly before his 88th birthday. A year after leaving the House of Representatives, the former Speaker’s car was “his greatest amusement these days,” the photo caption explained. “With his soft hat pulled low over his eyes,” the Baltimore Sun reported in 1908, “the Speaker enjoys a ride which shaves the supposed speed limit—enjoys it a little better than anything else, except a good story.”
