Object Details

Cyclists cruise down Pennsylvania Avenue in this 1884 print. Less than a decade later, the cycling craze had rolled into the Capitol: “The latest fad among our national statesmen is the Congressmen’s Bicycle Club,” newspapers reported. By 1896, a bike rack was installed in the Capitol crypt, and the Washington Post reported that “the place looked like a bicycle shop.”
