For decades in the mid-20th century, television cameras occasionally broadcast special events in the chamber. The House only began regular broadcasts of floor proceedings in the late 1970s. Marking C-SPAN’s first regular live transmission of proceedings March 19, 1979, Representative Albert Gore Jr. opined, “The marriage of this medium and of our open debate have the potential . . . to revitalize representative democracy.”
