Object Details

After the 1968 presidential election, one North Carolina elector cast his Electoral College vote for George Wallace, despite pledging to vote for Richard Nixon. When the House and Senate met to count Electoral College votes on January 6, 1969, Representative James O’Hara and Senator Edmund Muskie filed a formal objection to the vote. Despite their objection, the House allowed the vote for Wallace to stand. The actions of the “faithless elector” aside, Nixon was inaugurated two weeks later.
