Artist Bruce Elliott Roberts gave this painting to the House of Representatives on May 10, 1973. Roberts—along with his wife and children—lived for a time aboard a sailboat named the “Calypso Queen,” and his nautical interests extended to his work, in which maritime scenes predominated. In this painting, Roberts chose to depict ships from the era of the War of 1812, although not a specific battle.
