Roll top desks made by John Wanamaker Co. were part of the Cannon House Office Building’s original furnishings. Numerous compartments and tiny shelves in the upper portion helped Representatives keep their papers organized. Nine drawers and two sliding writing surfaces added plenty of storage and flexible workspace. A smaller “secretary” desk, three types of chairs, and other functional pieces of mahogany furniture fitted out the first offices for Representatives when the building was completed in 1908.
