Fofó Sunia, the first delegate representing American Samoa, shared this “I Love Samoa” bumper sticker with constituents in the 1980s. While his voters may have proudly announced their love of their small islands, in Congress Sunia felt his colleagues knew little about the territory and needed to be educated about its interests. The typeface used here is a faux-Chinese design, marked by curved wedge strokes that have a passing resemblance to basic strokes of Chinese calligraphy. It was designed in the 1880s, but not until the 21st century did its cultural inauthenticity lead many to consider it an offensive stereotype.
