This box of surgical soap was part of a government-issued medical kit, one of many dispatched to nuclear fallout shelters that grew prevalent in the United States in the 1960s. The Capitol was also prepared—medical kits, like the one that contained this soap—were stashed throughout campus. As Cold War fears of nuclear attack grew, the Office of Civil Defense launched this program to protect Americans, encouraging them to prepare fallout shelters.
