Dedicated labor organizer Santiago Iglesias put his beliefs upfront—including “Redencion Obrera Socialismo," translated literally to "Worker Redemption Socialism,” on his campaign button. He was elected Resident Commissioner for Puerto Rico in 1932 and remained in office until his death in 1939. Iglesias introduced a bill for Puerto Rican statehood on opening day in 1935, believing that joining the Union would best promote the interests of the poor on the island.
