“Yeas and Neighs” is what Congressman James Auchincloss labeled his annual outings to New Jersey’s Monmouth Park Race Track. The pun soon became the name of a congressional club for horse race fans. The club outings were so popular that there were races named after some of its attendees, including Speakers Sam Rayburn and Joe Martin. One 1956 excursion involved breakfast, steak lunches, and a dinner buffet, while hired cars provided roundtrip transportation, depositing the club members back in D.C. by midnight. This maroon necktie—worn by the group’s members—features hand-embroidered “Yeas and Neighs Society,” “please excuse,” and the logo.
