Pagers were used in the House of Representatives in the late 20th century. Party leaders used them to alert Members when a vote was nearing and that their presence was required on the House Floor. The simple text messages allowed for more information than the legislative buzzers, but less than the BlackBerries and smartphones that eventually replaced pagers.
